Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

To add or subtract two polynomials

Place each polynomial inside parentheses.
Place the appropriate operational symbol between the two polynomials.
(Plus to indicate addition, minus to indicate subtraction)
Remove Parentheses.See tutorial on removing parentheses.
Combine like terms. See tutorial on like terms.


Examples: 
Add 5x²  + 2x - 7 to 3x²  - 5x + 9.

(5x²  + 2x - 7) + (3x²  - 5x + 9)

=  5x²  + 2x - 7 + 3x²  - 5x + 9

=  8x²  - 3x + 2

Subtract 2x²  - 3x + 4 from 2x²  - 3x + 4.
 
(3x²  - 5x + 9) - (2x²  - 3x + 4)

=  3x²  - 5x + 9 - 2x²  + 3x - 4

=  x²  - 2x + 5

 Warning: In subtracting one polynomial from another, the polynomial
you are subtracting appears second, the polynomial from which you are
 subtracting appears first.
